How to remove old JetBackup (v4) backups?

Post by hstraf »

Hello,

We upgraded to JetBackup5 and are using the same destination folder for backups as the old JetBackup (v4).

We have been running JetBackup5 for several months, and everything is good.

So now we want to remove JetBackup 4 and all the old backups. How can we do that?

Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out through our forums. Our documentation provides information on how to configure JetBackup 4 to clean up its backups automatically, please see A Guide to Upgrading to JetBackup 5. This documentation also provides information on properly uninstalling JetBackup 4 once it is no longer desired.

If you would rather manually delete all the JetBackup 4 backups, you may go ahead and do so. JetBackup uses the following naming format for all Backup Job folders in v4 and v5: jetbackup_#_#_BACKUPJOBID

You can find the Backup Job IDs for the JetBackup 4 Backup Jobs by using the following JETAPI command:

Code: Select all

jetapi backup -F listBackupJobs
After you have noted down the Backup Job IDS for JetBackup 4, locate the matching Backup Job Folders in the destination and remove them manually. Once all the JetBackup 4 Backup Job Folders have been removed, feel free to uninstall JetBackup 4 and continue using JetBackup 5.

I hope you find all this information helpful, and please feel free to let us know if you require any assistance. Our support team is available 24/7/365 and can be reached via email at [email protected]

Is there a utility or something in JetBackup5 that can show any "old" folders or files located in any JetBackup directory that is not associated with any backup job?

For example, we have now removed all JetBackup4 backup directories we could find. However, we still have a directory called "jetbackup_3_4_606a4fa1e30f0224df378c84" that does not match any Job ID in either Jetbackup4 or JetBackup5. This directory contains a lot of backup files (all accounts on our server... about 500gb), and I don't want to manually remove it if it's actually used by something in jetBackup5. (ie: If we remove this directory.. will it screw up any of our JetBackup5 backups?)

Thanks.

Hello,

Currently, there is no Utility or tool that can identify "old" folders. However, I would highly suggest opening a Feature Request for that if you believe it should be added in JetBackup 5. You can do so by visiting Start New Topic.

With that said, the folder 'jetbackup_3_4_606a4fa1e30f0224df378c84' is the Backup Directory for JetBackup 5 Configuration Backups. This is generated when you have the Export JB Config enabled for your JetBackup 5 Destination. This is a JetBackup 5 Directory and should be left alone. The JetBackup 4 alternative to this folder would be just:

Code: Select all

jetbackup_3_4
Notice in JetBackup 4 Configuration Backups, the directory does not have the Backup Job ID in the name. If you see that folder, it can be safely removed. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
